As pet owners, are we prepared to assist our own pets in a life-threatening emergency? This course has come recommended to us several times for our MEETUP group. Eight participants are needed for the course to run.
Dog First Aid & CPR

The Dog First Aid and CPR course teaches the First Aid skills and provides guidance for emergency situations involving dogs until veterinary care is available. There is a Cat First Aid book available if your pet is a cat.

Through a combination of training, using the Dog First Aid & CPR reference guide and the accompany DVD, skills demonstrations and practice, the participants will be able to do the following by the end of the class:

· Understand the importance of knowing the normal physical condition, behaviors and habits of their dog

· Identify a normal heart and pulse rate, breathing rate and body temperature for dogs

· Describe how to safely approach an ill or injured dog

· Demonstrate how to safely muzzle a dog

· Explain how to determine if a dog is experiencing a life-threatening emergency by checking a dog’s airway, breathing and circulation (ABC’s)

· Describe how to perform CPR on a dog

· Describe how to care for shock for a dog

· Describe how to provide basic wound care and control bleeding for a dog

· Describe how to provide care to a dog with muscle, bone or joint injury

· Describe how to care for a dog involved in a car accident

· Describe how to care for a dog with a sudden illnesses

· Describe how to care for a dog suffering from a heat-or cold-related emergency

· Name the items that belong in a pet first aid kit

· Name the appropriate pet supplies that should be included in an emergency supplies kit

· Explain what should be considered when making a plan for their dog in the event of a disaster that required evacuation

The Dog First Aid & CPR class does not teach participants how to diagnose medical conditions or make recommendations for medications for an ill and injured dog. The class is approximately 3 hours in length. The cost is $40.00 which includes the Dog First Aid book with the DVD. If your pet is a cat you can request the Cat First Aid book which will cover the same materials. The skills for a cat will be covered in the class.
